Q.
Dear Coach:
I
have been an agent for about two years and I know
I have the potential to create more business. I think
part of my challenge is not having a daily schedule
or routine. I am not consistent in any of my daily
activities. As a result, my income is not what it
should be. What do you suggest? What do other agents
do?
Signed,
Needing
Some Structure
A.
Dear "Needing Some Structure",
Many
agents have previously worked in traditional jobs
where their time, priorities and goals were structured
for them. They had prescribed work hours and assignments
that they needed to achieve by specific deadlines.
As a Real Estate Agent, you are your own boss and
get to create your own schedule and priorities. Many
agents find this a double edged sword. They love the
freedom, but often times lack the structure and discipline
to use their time most productively.
To
structure and prioritize your most important activities,
create a daily “flexible” routine.
Having a routine helps insure that you do those high
priority activities that you most want to accomplish
each day. Examples include getting an adequate amount
of sleep each night, exercising, connecting with people
in your Sphere of Influence, spending time on your
own professional and personal development, and spending
time with your family. While this is a simple idea,
it is not easy to implement since it requires changing
the way you do things.
When
you write down your schedule, you will more likely
follow it. Realize that unexpected events will periodically
come up that will disrupt your schedule, so be flexible
and go with the flow. The important thing is to get
back on track and insure that you are focusing on
the most important activities each day.
Take
Action: Create a written daily schedule that
includes the most important things you want to accomplish
each day. Include when you want to get up, when you
want to exercise, when you want to start work, when
you want to call (or meet with) people in your Sphere
of Influence, when you want to write handwritten notes,
when you want to plan for the next day, and when you
want to spend time with your family.
As
an example, one of my Real Estate clients is a morning
person, so he gets up at 5:30 am. He showers, dresses
and starts his day by doing spiritual work for an
hour. He then reviews his finances for 30 minutes
so that he has a good idea of where he is relative
to his goals and spending plan. He then exercises
and spends an hour with his wife (his business partner).
At 11:30 am, he makes 5 calls to people in his Sphere
of Influence; followed by writing hand written notes
to the people he spoke to. The rest of the day is
dedicated to current clients and personal development.
He spends time each night with his family, plans for
the next day, and is in bed by 10:30 pm. This has
not been easy for him to achieve, but has made a big
difference in his productivity and quality of life.
The
goal is to create a routine for yourself that allows
you to accomplish those activities that enrich your
business and your life. Start with one small change
and build on your success. This is a proactive approach
that works!
