Dear Coach:
It seems like Blogging is the current rage. I took a class, but can it really help me build my business? What are the “essentials” for successful blogging? Is it really worth the time?

Dear Uncertain Blogger:
ISince I am not a blogger, I went to the source and asked Rich Jacobson (www.kitsaplife.com), a recognized and respected real estate blogger to share his wisdom. Here are some of Rich’s ideas and suggestions:
Ingredients of a winning blog:
Content. Publish good, relevant information that is geared towards helping educate consumers about real estate.
Consistency. Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. Like any good marketing program, it requires a commitment of time and effort.
Connection. A major benefit of blogging and social media is that they create the opportunity for meaningful connections/conversation to occur. Allow the 3 Powerful P’s of Blogging to come through – your personality, your passions, and your perspective.
Feed your blog at least a couple of times each week to begin with. Some of the best blogs are basic, short and to the point. You don’t have to publish a literary masterpiece each and every time. Good places to post your blogs are ActiveRain, Blogger, BiggerPockets, Squarespace, Trulia Voices, and Blogster.
Rich states that the use of Social Media and Blogging in particular, now generates nearly half of all of his business. The beauty of blogging is that potential clients come to you (your Blog).
Advice for agents who want to start blogging:
Blogging is not a magical purple pill that will solve all of your business woes. It is simply one more tool you can add to supplement your current marketing efforts.
Develop and incorporate a Social Media strategy into your annual marketing plan that includes a Blog and consistent involvement in Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, and YouTube. Start by lurking and listening.
Subscribe to some of the top Blogs in your area, Real Estate or otherwise. Read their articles and make comments.
Partner up with someone who is already Blogging or is interested in Blogging, and meet regularly for encouragement and accountability.
Like any new marketing program, the key word is “consistency.” It is easy to get excited, create a blog, post a few articles, and then move onto something else. It is also easy to think that a Blog alone will bring lots of clients. As Rich states, a Blog is one aspect of a Social Media strategy. By following Rich’s advice, we can all be more successful in utilizing Social Media to grow our business. I would also like to thank Claudia Wicks for her help and wish her much success with her new book Make the Move (www.rebasecamp.com).
