Dear Coach:
Current market conditions require me to spend more time working and getting less in return. As a result, I am feeling really out of balance in my life. What do you suggest?
Signed: Feeling Out of Balance
Dear Feeling Out of Balance:
To gain a fresh perspective, I invited Phil Rodocker, a highly experienced agent in Kent, WA, to share his suggestions for creating a balanced life. Phil subscribes to a 4 rule philosophy that states the need to have 4 basic elements scheduled in your day timer or electronic scheduler. Here is his program, in priority order.
Rule 1 is YOU
- First and foremost is making sure you spend time on YOU. This means time for exercise, time to read and relax, time for vacations and time for spiritual enrichment. You can’t do the best job for your clients, if you aren’t feeling emotionally and physically fit.
Take at least one day off each week for you. Give yourself a “mini” vacation each week by turning your phone off and not answering e-mails. Be sure to tell your clients about your day off so they will know that you won’t be available that day.
Rule 2 is your FAMILY
- Spend less time watching TV and videos, and more time personally interacting with your family. Take walks, play games, go out for ice cream, and schedule a “date night” with your partner. Take the opportunity to share yourself and be 100% present for your family.
Rule 3 is your OFFICE
- Fulfill your broker’s expectations for attending office meeting, trainings and individual meetings with him/her. In addition, create and implement an annual business plan collaborating with your broker. Your broker is your ally and wants to help you succeed.
Rule 4 are your CLIENTS
- Schedule time to spend time each day generating leads by calling your past clients and others in you Sphere of Influence. Spend time with your existing clients and following up on other prospects.
Most agents turn this upside down and spend most of their time with clients and very little time taking care of themselves and being with their family. Being clear on your goals and vision, and having a positive attitude about how you spend your time, will help you be more balanced in your life.
As a Life and Business Coach, I support and personally subscribe to Phil’s 4 rule philosophy. You won’t show up as the best agent for your clients, if you aren’t showing up for yourself.
